Delight yourself in the Lord
Psalms 37:3-5: ‘Trust in the Lord, and do good. Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and he shall bring it to pass.’
I
was meditating on this scripture and wanted to look deeper into what it means
to delight yourself in the Lord. To delight yourself in the Lord means to find fulfilment,
joy and satisfaction in Him. It is the feeling of contentment and happiness in
your relationship with God and making a purposeful and intentional choice to prioritise
Him above everything else.
Furthermore,
when we delight ourselves in the Lord, we are making a deliberate decision to
seek his presence and draw closer to him (James 4:8).
However,
in order to fully delight in the Lord God, it is important to understand who He
is. It is almost impossible to delight in something if you do not know anything
about it. It goes back to what I quantified in my previous blog which states; ‘in
order to increase your faith and your trust in God, you have to first get to
know Him personally for yourself just like any other relationship, you trust
them because you know them.’ The same principle applies here, you cannot delight
yourself in the Lord and give yourself to him fully, if you do not know him.
Subsequently,
this is why it is so crucial to build a relationship and connect with God on a
deeper and a more profound level; that way we can possess the aptitude to
delight in him in a powerful and efficacious way. When we display this, God
will bless us with the desires of our hearts that align with His will.
The
verse tells us to ‘Delight yourself also in the
Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.’ The word ‘also’ suggests
that there are other things in life that God allows to bring us great joy and take
great delight in and we should not feel guilty about this, as long as we are honouring
God through everything that we do. But God should never be taken out of the
equation, he takes priority over all things.
Nevertheless,
I want us to be careful when we choose to delight ourselves in God. It is vital
that we do not only delight in God for our own personal gain or desires. Our
relationship with God should not be transactional. Instead we should use that
time to learn more about Him, investing your time in prayer and in the word and
instantaneously everything for you will align according to His perfect plan and
purpose for you (Jeremiah 29:11).
Consequently,
when you focus solely on God, your hearts desires will begin to shift, some of
the things you thought you wanted from God become less and less appealing and
you will begin to redirect your focus more on the things God wants for you, rather
than the things you want for yourself.
So
take this time to delight yourself in the Lord and see how he aligns everything
perfectly for you.
Stay
blessed x
